Ionia Sentinel Standard, Feb 2000

Mrs. Elna A. Sprague, 90, of Berlin Township, passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000,
at Spectrum Health, Kent Community Campus in Grand Rapids.  

Elna Anna Cox was born on Feb. 8, 1910, in Ionia, the daughter of Benjamin and
Jessie (McCauley) Cox.  She graduated from Ionia High School as valedictorian in
1928.  She married Howard Sprague on June 4, 1932, and he preceded her in death
on Sept. 24, 1987.

In addition to being a devoted farm wife for her husband, Howard, Elna was a
clerk for the Berlin Township elections and a clerk for many years for the dairy
show at the Ionia Free Fair.  Mrs. Sprague was a life long member of the First
Christian Church.

Elna is survived by one son, Douglas Sprague of Ionia; one sister, Doris Garra
of Royal Oak; one brother, Ross (Lorraine) Cox of Ionia; several
brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death,
in addition to her parents and husband, Howard, by two brothers, Stuart and
Gerald Cox.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sprague will be held on Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at 2
p.m. from the Cook Funeral Home, Rich Street Chapel, Ionia with Pastor Bob
Girdwood of the Muir First Christian Church officiating.  Interment will be in
Balcom Cemetery.  Visiting hours will be Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of
services.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Muir First Christian
Church, the Ionia First Christian Church or the Ionia Commission on Aging.
