Ron was born November 10, 1978 to John and Phyllis Spurgis and at 29 had only begun to live. Ronny grew up in Lake Odessa, Mich., graduating in 1997. He loved his community and left only to pursue his teaching degree at Grand Valley State University. After graduating from college, he returned to Lakewood to being his career as an English teacher and was recently nominated to receive tenure. Although his teaching was cut short by his unexpected departure, he left a resounding impact on staff and students. He as one of those individuals who sincerely touched everyone he met. He was able to have the best of both worlds: academically and athletically. He spent his summers an autumns working hard with the football tem, while during the school day he left his love of reading influence his classroom to the highest degree. His sense of humor, his love of life and his true commitment to excellence was never lost on his students and thus they worked hard for him and themselves. As a teacher, he will truly be missed; a hole has been created that cannot be filled. His love of education and his pride in his community did not stop at the high school doors…Ronny was devoted to assisted with programs at West Elementary and Lakewood Middle School, where his children attend. Recently he and wife, Lisa, began working hard to build a successful debate program at the middle school—again proving his commitment to our Lakewood Schools and our communities. Not only has our high school lost a great teacher, but our community has lost a staunch advocator. Ron is preceded in death by grandparents Novella and Mary Whited. Surviving Ron is wife Lisa Spurgis; children, Robert, Bailiegh and Dawson Spurgis of Lake Odessa; parents John and Phyllis Spurgis of Lake Odessa; brother and sister-in-law, Rob and Aubrey Spurgis of Rockford and grandparents, John and Margaret Spurgis of Irons. A memorial service will be held at Lakewood High School Gymnasium on Saturday, April 13, 2008 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the family.
