She was born in Muskegon on June 20, 1950, daughter of Harold and Martha (Duis) Lathrop. Following high school, Kathy married Norman L. Smith and he preceded her in death in 1972. She married Timothy D. Stafford in 1998 and he survives. Kathy worked in housekeeping for a nursing home, but her main focus in life was her home and her family. She enjoyed reading, watching television and spending time on line, but she was completely in love with all things Disney. Kathy traveled to Disney at least once a year and took her children and grandchildren with her. She was the expert on what to do and see and was in the process of planning the next trip even before returning from the current one. It was all part of what made her a special mom and grandmother to all her children and grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Timothy, she is survived by her mother, Martha Lathrop of Muskegon; children, Cathy Ann (Terry) Miller of Ionia, Kate Williams of Ionia, Norman Smith of Kentucky, Candy (Tom) Jacobs of Ionia and a former daughter-in-law, Julie Smith; grandchildren Desiree, Lila, Terry, Carley, Emory, Melinda, James, Chelsea, Jonathon, Tyler, Christopher, Thomas, Robert, Sara and Kathy; nine great grandchildren; sisters Carlene Bryant and Mickey (Jim) Cripes, both of Muskegon; and many nieces and nephews including special niece Jade and nephew Jacob Bryant. In addition to her first husband Norman, she was preceded in death by her father, Harold; a grandson, Keith; a brother Robert "Sneezy" Lathrop; her special aunt "Lou"; and a long-time friend and companion, Al. A Memorial Service will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Community of Christ Church, 2671 Ducey Ave., Muskegon, Mich. 49442, with Pastor Laurel officiating. Interment is being planned for spring at Eggleston Twp. Cemetery near Muskegon. Those wishing to express sympathy are welcomed to consider a contribution in Kathy's memory to the hospice organization of the donor's choice.
