He was born April 16, 1897, in Czechoslovakia the son of Paul and Elizabeth Stahel. In 1923 he was married in Czechoslovakia to Eva Rumisek and came to New York in 1937 where they lived seven years before coming to Ionia. He was a retired employee of Mitchell Bentley corporation and formally associated with Grant Valley Chair Company. He served in World War I with the Austria-Hungarian army where he was wounded and held prisoner of war in Russia two years. Surviving besides the wife are two sons, Paul of Grand Rapids and Martin of Portage; six grandchildren; brother, Martin of Czechoslovakia; four sisters, Mrs. Eva Sagat and Mrs. Christina Hozak of Czechoslovakia; Mrs. Elizabeth Grudee of New York and Mrs. Rose Hlusek of Windsor, Canada. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Stone-Kauffman funeral home. Rev. George Chafee will officiate and interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
