A. Staley Dies Of Apoplexy Two Strokes in Quick Succession Prove Fatal to Well Known Portland Woman. Two strokes of apoplexy, coming in quick succession, proved fatal to Mrs. Wm. A. Staley, of Portland, last Saturday evening. Although she had been ill for several days preceding her death, Mrs. Staley was unusually bright and cheerful Saturday morning, and the end was entirely unexpected. On Saturday evening Mr. Staley was sitting on the bed, conversing with his wife, when the latter was seized with the two strokes that resulted in her death. At 8:00 o’clock she breathed her last. Maria Collins, daughter of Alfred Collins and Mary Hill, was a descendant of the French Hugenots. She was born in the village of York, Livingston county, N. Y., October 3, 1831, being in her 83rd year at the time of her death. In 1849 she graduated from Ingham University, after teaching for several years. Her marriage to Wm. A. Staley, who survives her, was solemnized at York on May 29, 1859. Upon coming to Michigan the couple settled at Muir and a few years later moved to Lyons. In 1871 they settled on the farm at Collins now occupied by John W. Baugh. For two years the couple resided in North Dakota and from that state went to California on account of Mrs. Staley’s health. Six years ago they moved to their home on Lincoln street, where death ensued last Saturday evening. Mrs. Staley joined the Congregational church 43 years ago and was active in the society until her health prevented. Besides the aged husband, deceased is survived by three children, Mrs. H. L. VanBenschoten, of Krem, N. D., who has had the entire care of her mother for past three years, Charles Staley, of Seattle, and Clarence, of Krem, N. D. A large number of friends and acquaintances who have always held Mrs. Staley in the highest esteem, paid their last respects at the funeral services Wednesday afternoon. Rev. John H. Stewart, of the Baptist church, officiated, and burial was in Portland cemetery.
