Abiel Silver Stannard only son of Jeremiah and Sophia Stannard, was born in 
Newport, New Hampshire, Dec 28, 1823, and died at Lowell, Mich., Feb. 17, 
1906, aged 82 years 1 month and 19 days.  He was the eldest of three children 
and the last survivor of his family.

When Abiel was three months old his father moved to Hardwick, Vermont, where 
they lived thirteen years, coming to Michigan the year our territory became a 
state, arriving in South Boston, June 3, 1837.  His father located on one of 
the best farms in the township and for sixty-six years this farm was Abiel’s 
home.  A. S. Stannard was a man of sterling integrity and more than ordinary 
ability one of the foremost citizens of his town.  Generous and public 
spirited, he has been closely identified with the development of South Boston, 
assisting in its transformation from a wilderness to a prosperous and 
enlightened community.

He was many times elected to positions of trust by his fellow townsmen, 
serving several terms as supervisor.  He was also prominent as supervisor.  He 
was also prominent in state and county politics, serving two terms in the 
legislature, with credit to himself and his constituents.  Mr. Stannard was a 
man of fine literary tastes, owning one of the largest libraries in Boston 
township and wonderfully familiar with its contents.  He was social by nature 
and strongly attached to his home and family, never happier than when 
surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
