The Portland Observer, Wednesday, February 13, 1907
Mrs. N. B. Rice and J. E. Newman attended the funeral of an aunt at Grand 
Ledge Saturday.  She was Mrs. Stark, nee Hixson, sister of their mother and 
the last of her generation, and was 89 years of age.  She came to Portland 
with her husband in 1836, being among  the earliest settlers of this vicinity, 
and moved to Grand Ledge in 1853.  Her husband went to California during the 
gold rush in ’49 and died there; or at least he never returned.
