Portland Observer, 18 Dec 1895

Died. – In this township, on the 11th inst., Janette, wife of Chas. Steadman, 
aged 38 years.

Mrs. Janette Steadman, wife of Chas. Steadman, was born in Portland, Ionia 
county, Mich., being nearly 38 years of age at the time of her death.  She 
leaves a kind and loving husband; a dear father and mother; two of the most 
devoted brothers, and two sisters to mourn her loss, a dear brother and sister 
having preceded her to the better life a number of years ago.  She lived and 
died on the farm where she was born, having been away from home but a very 
short time to live after she was married.  But few have ever been so devoted to 
a husband as she has been, and he in turn was very kind and devoted to her.  In 
the last hours of her sickness she sought and found the Savior and died 
triumphing in His love.  She said it was so hard to leave all the loved ones, 
but if it was God’s will that she should go she was not afraid of the King of 
Terrors, for the sting of death was taken away.

How the loved ones in the home will miss her, but the remembrance of having 
done all in their power to alleviate her sufferings will help them to give her 
up and say thy will be done.  She was one of the greatest of sufferers, but she 
bore it all with a patience and resignation seldom ever witnessed, and now we 
bid adieu to the loved one, feeling that it will be but a short time before we 
shall meet her in that beautiful land just over the River.

and neighbors who assisted us in the last sickness and sad bereavement of our 
daughter, Mrs. Nettie Steadman.  – Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kelly and Family.
