Stebbins, 68, of Ionia, passed away Saturday noon in Butterworth hospital in Grand Rapids where he had been taken only a few days previous, for a general checkup following a serious heart attack. Mr. Stebbins was elected mayor of Ionia in 1981, resigning that position when he was elected lieutenant governor of Michigan under Governor William Comstock. Among other positions, Mrs. Stebbins was trustee of the Ionia city board of education, member of the Sheridan school board, and postmaster at Sheridan. Born December 9, 1873, in Easton Township, the son of Albert and Emeline Stebbins, he attended the Dexter district school, and Saranac high school, after which he took a short course in embalming. In 1904 he moved to Sheridan and established a funeral home, where he continued to do business until 1921. At that time he moved to Ionia where he was living at the time of his death. Survivors include the wife, Myrtle, a daughter Mrs. Blanche Monningh of Kalamazoo, and six sons, Adelbert of Sheridan, Hyland of Lansing, Melbourne of Grand Rapids, Gerald, Leeland and Max all of Ionia. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in the Ionia Methodist Church, with Rev. Frederick G. Dunbar officiating. Interment was made in the Easton township cemetery.
