Wave, Thurs. Sept. 13, 1973 Owen Steckle Die at Sturgis Owen H. Steckle of White Pigeon, former Freeport area resident and prominent farmer, passed away last Thursday, August 30, at the Sturgis Hospital where he had been hospitalized for ten hours. He was born in Freeport, Nov. 14, 1886, the son of Abraham and Sarah (Furtney) Steckle and attended the Freeport schools and Ferris College. A member of the Fish school board and the Freeport Creamery board, he had been a livestock buyer for Allen Behler at Lake Odessa. He was a member of Freeport Masonic Lodge, and was a well known area sports enthusiast and outstanding baseball player when a young man. Mrs. Steckle married Lena Smelker, who passed away in Mar. of 1960. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Helen) Shemberger and Mrs. Dorothy Dowley, both of White Pigeon and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held last Sunday at two o'clock at the Leonard-Osgood Funeral Home at Hastings. Rev. Roger Nielson of Lawton officiated with burial in the Freeport cemetery.
