She was 88 years old. Known to friends as Nona, she was born to Frank & Helen Lucile Covey on January 1, 1938 in the pink house at the end of Short Street in Belding,MI. She was the third of five children and had many memories of growing up on the farm. She graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1955 and was the recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Award. In her career, Nona wore many hats and gravitated to leadership roles. In the 1960s, she defied stereotypes by becoming a Cub Scout leader at a time when the role was not typically held by women. Her love for flowers and talent for arranging led her to the world of small business ownership at Thornapple Floral in Middleville. She also held many clerical positions, including at Hastings Aluminum, Godwin heights Public Schools, Northern Equipment, and Leighton Church, where she and her husband, David, were active parishioners. She and David celebrated 52 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2023. She was as active at play as she was at work, fostering many hobbies she deeply enjoyed, such as sewing, cake decorating, painting, scrapbooking, card making, reading and writing poetry. At her house, she could often be found diligently working on a jigsaw puzzle, insisting that any visitors stay to help find the pieces that had evaded her. The meticulous curator of many eclectic collections- pigs, teapots, birds, and windmills, just to name a few- she created a home that sparked curiosity and exuded warmth, where everyone was always welcome. Nona launched many successful programs at Leighton Church including the Pioneer Clubs kids' ministry, single adult ministry, and clown ministry, in the spirit of bringing people together and ensuring no one was forgotten. Nona will be remembered as a pillar of strength in her family and community She was loved by many and touched the lives of so many more.
