Belding Banner, 18 Nov 1954

After a lingering illness of several years, Carl Steele passed away Saturday 
forenoon at his home, 1161 Lakeview Drive at Long Lake at the age of 86 years.  
Mr. Steele was born in Grattan township, January 30, 1868.  He married Elma 
Olds in 1891 and she passed away in 1902 leaving two sons, Clayton and Marion.  
He married Posey Barstow in 1903 at Mendon and to this union were born three 
children, Margaret, Marie and Don.

Mr. Steele was a rural letter carrier out of the Belding Post Office for 32 
years and retired 21 years ago.  He was a member of Mail Carriers Association, 
National Carriers’ Ass’n and the Congregational church.

The sons and daughters all survive their father; Clayton living in Grand 
Rapids; Marion in Detroit; (Margaret), Mrs. Vernon Vanderpool in Greenville; 
(Marie) Mrs. Harry Diebold in Bay City, and Don in Grand Rapids.  There are 
also two sisters, Miss Edna Steele of Lake Odessa, Mrs. William Duryea of 
Marshall, and one brother, Charles Steele of Grand Rapids.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 o’clock at Ellis Funeral Home, Rev. 
H.S. Ellis officiated and the burial was in Otisco cemetery.  Pall bearers were 
Stanley Strong, Charles Childs, Spencer Smith, Maurice Steele, Merideth Steele 
and Harold Steele.
