The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Saturday, May 26, 1928

In the death of Mrs. William Steele, which occurred Saturday morning at 2 
o’clock at the home, 421 East Washington street, Ionia lost one of its most 
noble women.  In failing health for several years, Mrs. Steele succumbed to an 
illness which began a few weeks ago, and became critical early this week.  Her 
passing takes from the community one of those sterling characters whose lives 
exemplify all that is best in loyal Christian service, sterling motherhood, 
and those virtues of devotion to home, church and fellowmen which are beyond 
all praise, and combine to shed the radiance of rectitude over the evening of 
a saintly career.

Mrs. Steele had on April 7 last reached the age of 80 years, 48 of which have 
been spent in Ionia or its vicinity.  She was born in Meaford, Canada, April 
7, 1848, married to Wm. Steele at the age of 19 years, and came to Ionia in 
1882 from Spring Lake, Mich., where they had gone from their Ontario home.  
Mr. and Mrs. Stele were married in January, 1867, and had just passed their 
sixtieth wedding anniversary when Mr. Steele’s death occurred a year ago last 
March.

At the time of her death Mrs. Steele’s four daughters were with her, and her 
son John visited her but a few days ago.  Of her seven children five survive 
her, John, of Detroit; Margaret, of New York; Mary, of Evanston, Ill.; Jessie 
Douglas, of Ionia, and Martha, of Chicago, Ill.

Funeral services will be held from the home Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, 
with burial in Highland Park cemetery.  Rev. Joseph H. Green, pastor of Mrs. 
Steele’s church here, the First Presbyterian, will officiate.
