The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Monday, March 13, 1939
Ill for several days, Mrs. Jessie Jane Steele, 82, of 136 High street, died 
early Sunday morning.  Mrs. Steele was the widow of former Mayor Michael L. 
Steele, of Ionia.  Funeral services are to be held from the home Tuesday 
morning at 10:30 o’clock with Rev. Adam Westmaas, pastor of the First 
Presbyterian church officiating.  Interment will be at the Highland Park 
cemetery near Ionia.

Mrs. Steele was born June 13, 1856 at Owen Sound, Ontario where she attended 
school and later taught school.  While teaching school she was married October 
18, 1880 to Michael L. Steele at Chatsworth, Ontario.  Two years later they 
moved to Muir where they lived for about six months before they located at 
Ionia where Mrs. Steele has since lived.  Mrs. Steele was a life member of the 
Ionia Eastern Star.  

One of her six children survive, Miss Mary Steele, a teacher in the Ionia 
public schools.  Besides the daughter Mrs. Steele sis survived by three 
sisters, Mrs. D. A. Campbell of Saskatoon, Sask., Mrs. Will McCarty of Holland 
Centre, Ontario, and Mrs. John Stewart of Detroit; and two brothers, Alex 
Mitchell and Wallace Mitchell, both of Owen Sound, Ontario.
