A German by birth, Mr. Steinhauer gave to the country of his adoption a son, Edward, who died on his way overseas where he was going in defense of this country against that of his father’s nativity. Edward had spent nine months training in a Georgia camp but was taken ill and died on the boat, and was buried at sea. Mr. Steinhauer was born in Germany 85 years ago and came to the United States with his wife and one son 53 years ago. The child died shortly after their arrival here. They came almost immediately to Ionia and he had lived here since. He was a shoemaker by trade, and after his arrival here he did custom work, maintaining a shop for years on Main street next to the Douglas shoe store. After manufacturing concerns with their mass production encroached on his business he began shoe cobbling. His first wife died in 1903 and he later married Mrs. Bertha Nims, who survives him. He also leaves two sons, Fred and Homer, of Detroit, and a daughter, Mrs. Charles Schelen, of Burlington, Ia. Another daughter, Mrs. Hulda Stadlandel, died in Burlington, Ia. about a year ago. Thirteen grandchildren also survive. He was affiliated with the Evangelical church. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Boynton funeral chapel. Those wishing to view the remains may do so at the chapel any time before the services. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery. Rev. A. L. Bingaman will have charge of the service.
