Feb. 13, 1980 IONIA- John F. Stencel, 78, died Tuesday afternoon of an apparent cardiac arrest at his residence in the Evergreen Trailer Park. He was born Jan. 1 1902 in Berlin Township, the son of John G. and Louise Hafner Stencel. He was married to Crystal Hawn on March 26, 1929 in Ionia. The Stencels have spent the last eight winters in Mesa Ariz. Mr. Stencel was last employed by the C&O Railroad where he worked for 12 years. Prior to that he had been a farmer in Ionia County. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, the Luther Society of the church, and the Brotherhood of Railroad Workers. Survivors include his wife, five sons, Burton and James of Ionia, John of Lowell, Gerald of Long Island, and Richard of Fort Collins, Colo.; six daughters, Kathryn Stillman of San Diego, Calif., Ruth Hewitt of Fenwick, Joyce Dowdy of Littleton, Colo., Marion Koelsch of Juneau, Alaska, Carolyn Huisjen of Fort Collins, Colo., and Sue Senasack of Annapolis, Md.; 24 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A daughter, Phyllis Loraine, and a son, William Edward, preceded him in death. Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Church with the Rev. Leo Kostizen officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery. A memorial has been established for St. Johns Church. Contributions may be left at the Myers-Roetman Funeral Home.
