March 16, 2000 Mrs. Crystal H. Stencel, 91, long-time Ionia resident, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2000, at Metron of Belding. She was born March 19, 1908, in Ionia, the daughter of Wilburt and Sarah Mae (Radsack) Hawn and spent her entire life in the Ionia area. She was a graduate of Ionia High School and was married on March 26, 1929, to John Fredrick Stencel in Ionia, and he preceded her in death on Feb. of 1980. Mrs. Stencel spent her life being the loving, caring wife and mother of her husband of over 50 years, and her 12 children. She was a life-time member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Ionia, the Ladies Aid of the church and was a helper in the area 4-H groups. Surviving are five daughters, Kathryn (Terry) Therien of San Diego, Calif., Joyce Dowdy of Denver, Colo., Caroline (John) Huisjen of Ft. Collins, Colo., Marian (Kendell) Koelsch of Juneau, Alaska and Sue (Ed) Senasack of Annapolis, Md; four sons, James (Audrey) Stencel of Ionia, John (Virginia) Stencel of Lowell, Gerald (Josephine) Stencel of Long Island, N.Y., Richard (Kathy) Stencel of Ft. Collins, Colo.; 26 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and one brother, Victor (Virginia) Hawn of Long Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Ruth Hewitt and Phyllis Stencel; one son, Burton Stencel and one brother, Howard Hawn. Funeral services for Mrs. Crystal H. Stencel will be held on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ionia, with Pastor Paul Yanke officiating. Interment will be in Highland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, March 17, 2000, at Cook Funeral Home from 2 until 4 and 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Rich St. Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, envelopes available at the Cook Funeral Home or at the church.
