Stevenson, 67, for 31 years a business owner and operator in Ionia before his retirement in 1954, died at 8 a.m. Monday three hours after suffering a heart attack. Ill for two years with a heart ailment, Mr. Stevenson retired in August 1954 from active participation in Ionia business circles. He had owned and operated Stevenson’s Department store, one of the city’s oldest business establishments. It was established in 1859. Mr. Stevenson had spent an active Sunday having played golf with two close friends, Dr. Perry C. Robertson and L.W. Stewart. He had used an electric golf cart as had been his practice since his illness two years ago. Last week with a group of friends Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson had vacationed in Canada. He became ill at 5 a.m. Monday and was removed to the Ionia County Memorial hospital at 6 a.m. Born at Ashland, Wis., October 5, 1889, Mr. Stevenson was the son of Arthur L. and Emma Stevenson. He attended schools in Ashland county Wis.; Ionia, and the Wisconsin Agricultural College at Madison, Wis. Before returning to Ionia permanently he spent some time working for the Wisconsin State Forestry Department at Trout Lake, Wis. He was also employed by the Stopel Reality Company of Detroit and the Fisher Body Company of Detroit. For two years before entering business in Ionia in 1923 with his father, Mr. Stevenson was the Michigan representative of the S.L. Munson Company of Albany, N.Y. During World war I he served for two years in the 7th Service Company of the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Coming to Ionia he entered an active business career with his father in 1923 and continued to [unreadable line] after his father’s death until August 1954 when he became ill and was forced to retire. He sold the store interest but retained owner ship of the building. Active in most Ionia civic affairs and in many organizations Mr. Stevenson was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Ionia and had served as a member of the church session and board of trustees. He was also a member of the Ionia Lions Club, the Ionia Country club, the American Legion, the Masons, and the Ionia Fishing and Hunting club. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth B. Stephenson, a daughter, Mrs. Mary Anne Aldrich; a granddaughter, Susan Lynn and a grandson Daniel Aldrich; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth S. Barnard of St. Crois Falls, Wis.; and Esther Dopp of Eveleth, Minn.; cousins, Rich Stevenson of Huntington Woods, Mrs. Leo McAlary of Ionia, Mrs. Edwin Nash of Clarksville and an aunt, Mrs. Lynne Nash Stuart of Clarksville; two nieces and two nephews and two grandnieces and three grandnephews. Funeral services are to be conducted from the First Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. with the Rev. George Rentschler officiating. Interment will be at Highland Park cemetery. The Myers funeral home is in charge of the services. A Memorial fund will be established for the Presbyterian church in memory of Mr. Stevenson.
