Stevenson Dead Came to Ionia More Than Sixty Years Ago and Died Aged 72. William P. Stevenson, son of George Stevenson one of the early residents of Ionia, died at 12 o’clock Sunday after an illness of two weeks and at the age of 72 years. For some time his health had shown evidence of a breakdown. He was born in Grand Rapids, there being two children in the family, the other brother, George dying in Detroit about 12 years ago. Nature sadly afflicted William Stevenson with defective eyesight, but through life he managed to make his way, attending the public schools in his youth, and coming with his parents to Ionia more than 60 years ago. As he grew to manhood he accepted employment at the Pere Marquette shops, where he worked the greater part of his life, until his age and physical condition became such that he had to give it up. Since that time he had been able to do little. In the earlier days of his life William Stevenson belonged to the Ionia Masons, where he was in good standing. He at one time belonged to the Methodist church of this city. Later he attended the services at St. John’s Episcopal church where for years he occupied the front pew and none in the congregation were more interested in the service than he. While his years on this earth were burdened with sorrow and trouble, he seemed always to accept his lot with patience and fortitude, and those who knew him realized that in his heart was the kindness and sympathy of true and honest manhood. Even in the moments of his greatest sorrow he always had a kind and generous word for friend and acquaintance. Friends will meet at ten o’clock tomorrow morning at the undertaking rooms of C.H. Bradley where Dr. M.M. Callen will read the service, hymns will be sung and the remains carried to the family lot in Oak Hill cemetery for interment.
