The Ionia Standard, Friday, December 4, 1885

Shortly after ten o’clock Tuesday night J. D. Stewart, keeper of a temperance 
restaurant and billiard room at Big Rapids, found his wife lying dead on the 
floor of the room above.  She had disrobed all but her shoes.  Less than two 
hours previous he was with her and she was as well as ever.  They had been 
married less than a month ago at Greenville.  A coroner’s jury ordered a post 
mortem examination and returned a verdict that she died by attempting an 
abortion by her own hand.  Mrs. Stewart was a daughter of John Snyder of 
Otisco, and the remains were brought to Otisco for interment.
