F.A. STIVEN DIES AFTER ILLNESS OF SEVERAL MONTHS. ---- HEART DISEASE FATAL TO WIFE OF OFFICER OF HAYES-IONIA COMPANY The death of Mrs. Mary H. Stiven occurred about 1 o'clock Sunday morning at her home, 147 Lafayette street, after an illness, of more than a year with heart trouble. For the past few weeks Mrs. Stiven has been gradually failing, although she was hopeful to the last that she would be able to regain her health. Mrs. Stiven was first attacked shortly before Christmas a year ago when she was engaged in preparing her home for the Christmas season. Was Old Resident Since 1863, when with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin R. Covert, she came to the city of Ionia. Mrs. Stiven had lived on the same lot where the home now stands. The first home was just east of the present home, and was the old Covert homestead. One of Ionia's pioneers and descended from one of the families which were the first to settle in this county, Mrs. Stiven was born in Ionia in 1858. The home of her parents then was south of the river and on the road between Mill street and Cleveland street. She was but five years of age when she first came to Ionia city. Benjamin Covert, grandfather of Mrs. Stiven was one of the early settlers in Keene township, where he came from New York state in the forties. Was Church Worker Mr. and Mrs. Stiven were married April 29, 1879, by Rev. Job Pierson, then pastor of the Presbyterian church and since that time her life has been closely connected with that church, where she was for many years an active worker. Besides her husband, F.A. Stiven who is assistant treasurer of the Hayes-Ionia company, she leaves two sons, Frederick B. Stiven, professor of music at Oberlin college and Will A. Stiven, now with the American National bank in Detroit. Mr. and Mrs. Will Stiven arrived this morning and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stiven are expected tonight. The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the residence and will be conducted by Rev. Harry E. Porter and Rev. W.K. Spencer.
