Jesse Stockford, 48, reformatory guard, was found dead in bed in the officers’ quarters Tuesday afternoon. He came off the wall at about midnight Monday and went to bed. He was found face downward in bed at 4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, and it is thought he had a fainting spell and rolled over on his face, smothering to death. He had suffered several such spells recently, it was said. An inquest was to be held Wednesday afternoon. Stockford had been employed at the reformatory only three weeks, having come here from a soldier’s home. Stockford was born in Clarksville, August 18, 1878. He served as a regular in the Nineteenth Infantry, Company D., during the Spanish-American war, seeing service in Puerto Rico and the Philippines after being transferred to the hospital corps. He was a member of the Saranac masonic lodge and of the Clarksville order of the Moose. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Leifie Stockford, of Saranac; two sisters, Mrs. Mayford Heaven and Mrs. Leroy Heaven, of Clarksville; and a brother, C.C. Stockford, of Toledo. Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m., eastern time, from the home of his sister, Mrs. Leroy Heaven, one mile west of Clarksville. Rev. Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Clarksville. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/s/stockfor25882nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 1.9 Kb
