Mrs. Mason Stoddard Survives Husband but Few Hours. Last week The Observer mentioned the unusual fact that William Hobbs and wife had died within a few hours of each other and would be buried in the same grave, which was done last Tuesday afternoon, burial having been made in Portland cemetery, they having no relatives in this section except the family of Stephen Brooks, with whom they made their home. One of this couple died on Friday and the other on Sunday. Almost an identical case with this occurred last week, when Mason W. Stoddard, father of Mrs. R. P. Grattan, died at the home of his daughter in this village last Thursday. Heart trouble, with which he had been afflicted for some years, was cause of death. He was 75 years of age. The time set for his funeral was last Saturday afternoon at M.E. church and friends of the family had gathered to attend the services, carriages were at the house to convey the mourners, etc., when the services were postponed because the wife of Mr. Stoddard, who had been ill with grip for some time but who had not been considered dangerously so, had passed away while these arrangements were in progress. The funeral of Mr. Stoddard was postponed until Monday, when services for both were held and the remains taken to East Plains cemetery, near Hubbardston, for burial in one grave. Mrs. Stoddard was 64 years of age. The couple were old residents of North Plains, having resided there 53 years before coming to Portland about two years ago, where they made their home with their daughter. They also have another daughter whose home is in Detroit but who had been here some time caring for her parents, Mrs. Grattan having become about worn out with their illness and that of her husband and child, both of whom have been quite serious ill. Mr. Stoddard has two sisters in Greenville and a brother in Coopersville, while Mrs. Stoddard has a sister at Zeeland, Ottawa county.
