Stone, aged eighty-three, and for many years a resident of Belding and vicinity, died at his home in the southeast part of the city Friday morning after a two weeks’ illness. Lewis Stone was born in Solan, New York, August 3, 1832 and spent his boyhood days with his father working in a blacksmith shop. When the Civil war broke out he enlisted from Albany as a private in company B, 7th artillery and served three years. During that time he was promoted to the office of sergeant and later to that of lieutenant. At the close of the war Mr. Stone went to Canada to visit relatives and while there met and married Catherine Curtis. About a year after this, in 1867, Mr. and Mrs. Stone came to Michigan and settled near Belding. Mr. Stone is survived by a wife, five children and three grandchildren. Mr. Stone was an enthusiastic Democrat and at one time held the office of supervisor. Funeral services were held at the late home Sunday afternoon at two o’clock in charge of Rev. Chas. M. Pease. Interment was made in the Belding cemetery. The local G.A.R. post and the Sons of Veterans attended in a body.
