Dec. 3, 2008 John Hammond Stowell, aged 77, of Ionia, passed away Dec. 1, 2008. He was born Oct. 21, 1931 in Flint, the son of Melvin and Pearl (Hammond) Stowell. He married Patricia Peabody May 4, 1962. John graduated from Brooksville High School in Florida. He received his Bachelors from MSU. He served in the army during the Korean war as a ranger where he received the purple heart. John retired from Fischer Body in 1986 and later worked for Dial a Ride. John was a member of Sheridan VFW, St. Johns Episcopal Church, TPA, Ionia Moose Lodge, Traffic Club of Lansing, Various Golf and Bowling Leagues. He taught kids golf for Ionia Parks and Recreation, and was EMT for Roetman Ambulance Service. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Patricia Stowell of Ionia; children, Dennis Cronk of Grand Ledge, Dawn (Darrell) Reynolds of Ionia, Kim (Mike) Danielski of Ill., Deanna Parker of Grand Rapids, Brian (Brenda) Cronk of Ionia, Lori (Wayne) Christiansen of Grand Ledge and John A. Stowell of Las Vegas, Nev.; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Caroline (James) Hopkins of Arizona; brother–in-law, Joseph (Sue) Peabody of Florida and sister-in-law, Mary Anne (David) Alexy of Utica. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Susan Valentine Stowell, grandson, Neil Smejkal and sister-in-law, Loretta Peabody. Funeral services will be held Thursday 2 p.m. at St. Johns Episcopal Church with Father John Crean officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
