She had resided at 2855 West Long Lake road and had four children with her when the car she was driving went out of control on Hayes road and crashed headlong into a tree. State police at the Ionia post who investigated the accident said they believed Mrs. Stowell was trying to rid the car of a bee when she lost control. She remained in critical condition at Ionia County Memorial hospital more than 24 hours from injuries which included fractured skull, possible fracture of both knees, severe lacerations of the face, contusions and abrasions. Also seriously injured in the one car crash were Brenda M. Harwick, who has been transferred to a Lansing hospital, and her brother Jerry, 10. Other children less seriously injured were Kimberly Stowell, 4, and Deanna Stowell, 2. Mrs. Stowell was born September 29, 1936, in Clinton county, the daughter of Charles and Anna Valentine. She was married October 12, 1956 to John H. Stowell and had made their home at Long Lake the past three years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church. Surviving beside her husband John: two daughters, Kimberly and Deanna; her mother, Mrs. Anna Valentine of Muir; three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Talbot of Lowell, Mrs. Mary Tasker of Palo, and Mrs. Emma Normington of Rapid City, S.D.; three brothers, Richard, Clare and Buster of Muir; and a half brother, Wayne Valentine of DeWitt. Funeral will be at First Presbyterian church Monday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Wilfred G. Sawyier officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Easton cemetery. The family will be at Boynton funeral home Sunday from 2 until 5 p.m. and 7 until 9 p.m., to receive friends. ------------ Young Woman Loses Life As Car Hits Tree A young woman died Friday in Ionia county as a result of an accident on Thursday, August 10, when her car veered off the road and hit a tree. This was recorded as the eighth fatal accident on Ionia County roads for 1961. Mrs. Susan Iva Stowell, 24, died on Friday evening, August 11, at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital. The accident occurred on Thursday after a bee had flown into the car she was driving and distracted Mrs. Stowell. The accident occurred on Hayes Road, four miles north of Muir in Ionia county Passengers in the car were Mrs. Stowell’s two small children, Kimberly, 4 and Deanna, 2, who were hospitalized with minor injuries. Also in the car were Gerry Hartwick, 10, who suffered a fractured hip and possible fracture of the upper jaw and his sister, Brenda, 8, who had a compound fracture of upper and lower jaws and a possible skull fracture. Surviving, besides her two children, are her husband, John; mother, Mrs. Anna Valentine of Muir; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Tasker of Palo, Mrs. Nancy Talbot of Lowell, Mrs. Emma Normington of Rapid City, South Dakota; three brothers, Richard, Buster and Clare of Muir and a half brother, Wayne Valentine of DeWitt. Funeral services were held on Monday, August 14, at the First Presbyterian church, with Rev. Wilfred Sawyier officiating. Interment was in Easton cemetery.
