Little Ira Stowell, the bright four-year-old son of Samuel Stowell, was engaged in playing with some neighbor’s children beside the roadside beneath an embankment which had been excavated to obtain gravel. It is supposed that the children in some way loosened the earth, and the whole embankment came tumbling down. Three of the little folks saw the heap of dirt give way, and managed to escape, but Ira was buried under three feet and a half of earth. The neighbors were promptly apprised of the unfortunate occurrence, but it was nearly twenty minutes before the debris could be cleared away, and the lifeless body of the boy reached. The funeral occurred on Saturday, Rev. Mr. Roberts of Woodland preaching a fitting sermon. Mr. Stowell and wife were quite overcome with grief, as little Ira was the pet of the household. They received the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
