Jean was born on April 9, 1916 to Florence and John Kirtland near Erie, Mich. She was the oldest of six children, two of whom survive her, Carol Pratt of Missouri, and Nancy (John) Trefethen of Palo. Her sisters, Allison Kaufhold and Joyce Napoli (Danny) and her brother John Kirtland (Colleen) predeceased her. She graduated from the University of Michigan School of Nursing in 1937 and worked at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing where she met Howard Strachan of Muir, whom she married on April 30, 1939. He predeceased her in 1998. They settled in Ionia County and began 30 years of fruit and poultry farming with his parents at Empire Orchards on M-21. Jean worked at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital and was a nurse at the Michigan Training Unit in Ionia. She and Howard were members of the Ionia First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and were active in the Masonic Lodge and its various affiliations. Jean was an active volunteer in Prison Ministry, American Red Cross, and Church Women United and she made two special trips to the Holy Land. Jean and Howard were parents of four children, Sandra (Gary) Lummen of Grand Rapids, John (Martha) Strachan of Denver, Colo., Norman (Linda) Strachan of Morrice, Mich., and Judith Magney of Toronto, Ontario. They had nine grandchildren, Amanda (Joe) Haskins of Plainwell, David (Missy) Dolphin of Kent City, Tim (Jennifer) Dolphin, of Grand Rapids, Tina Strachan of Texas, Lisa (Derek) Walker of Colorado, Mary Rutherford of Morrice, Bob (Belinda) Strachan of Oklahoma, Aaron (Judith) Magney and Kurt Magney of Toronto, Canada and nine great grandchildren. Jean will also be lovingly missed by her many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was a woman of great faith and lived a life committed to her Lord. A celebration of Jean's life will be held on Friday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Ionia with Rev. Judith Shaver officiating. Family invite friends and family to visit in the church parlor from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Graveside services will be at North Plains Cemetery.
