In 1877 at the age of 21 he came to Michigan, coming direct to Campbell township. He prepared himself to teach in the public schools of his adopted state and followed this profession in the schools of Ionia and Barry counties for 22 years, during which time he also acquired and built up the fine farm home in Campbell township which is now the family residence. Besides following the work of teaching, he filled many offices of public trust and positions of business endeavor, among which are school inspector, member of school board, member board of review, township drain commissioner, member of the township board, justice of the peace, and county drain commissioner, holding the last three named at the time of his death. He had been county drain commissioner for Ionia county for a number of years and was prominent among the drain commissioners of the state, belonging to the state drain commissioners’ association, serving on its committees. Nov. 4, 1878 he was united in marriage to Sarah A. Hines of Campbell, Mich. To this union were born seven sons and two daughters: Lincoln A and Ivan F., deceased; Sherman T. of Holland, and Logan J. of Bessemer, Mich., Loran J. of Wibaux, Montana and Edgar, Roy A. and Mesdames Verie A. Geiger and Opal W. Houghton of this place. In the winter of 1915-16 he became ill of what appeared to be stomach trouble but what later developed cancer. Having ascertained that he could not hope to recover with ordinary treatment, he consulted specialists and finally May 24, entered the state hospital at Ann Arbor for examination and treatment. After the examination it was decided there that nothing could help him and he was preparing to return home in company with his brother, Velney Strong of Lake Odessa when death, due to a weakened condition and a weakened heart, quietly took him, Saturday at about 4 p.m., May 27, 1916. As if going on a long journey he had made every arrangement for his demise, settled all of his business affairs, arranged the future of his widow and family and planned all of the details of his funeral. The funeral was held from the residence and Thornapple church, Thursday afternoon, June 7, interment being in the family lot in Campbell cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. Isaac Mourer, assisted by Rev. S. M. Smith and Rev. A. M. Bostwick, all life time friends of the deceased. Geo. A. Weed, a close friend of the deceased, during life time, was the funeral director and four sons, Sherman T., Roy A., Edgar and Logan J. and two nephews, Milo T. and Henry Norcutt carried the body to its last resting place. Singing was furnished at the house by a quartet of neighbors, Chas. Mourer, Clarence Jarstfer and Mesdames Nora and Hannah Tasker, at the church by the Brethren singers. The county officers and other close friends from Ionia, a large delegation of county drain commissioners, headed by their president, John W. Smith of Port Huron and a delegation from the State Savings bank at Lake Odessa attended in a body. Besides this a large concourse of home friends, neighbors and business associates paid their last respects to their departed friend and neighbor. The relatives from away were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Strong and son, Eley of Metamora, Ohio, Mrs. Angie Ross of Gladwin, Mrs. And Mrs. Uriah Fuller of Detroit, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Strong of Delta, Ohio, and William Stout of Swanton, Ohio. Beautiful floral tributes were offered by the county officers, drain commissioners, friends and neighbors. A good man and citizen has gone. He was always interested and active in the public affairs and welfare of this community and county. He was faithful to every trust and did his duty fearlessly as he saw it. He loved his neighbors as himself and ever extended the hand of a helper and a benefactor. He was conscientious as a father, rearing a good family. He had a high regard for his God and Creator, accepted Christ and was consecrated and received full baptism in the Christian faith. He was a patient sufferer and courageously departed this life with the best advice to his mourning family and friends to live uprightly and be faithful Christians. By his own statement he bore a Christian’s good will and love toward every co-laborer, neighbor and fellowman. His labors on earth have been well finished and he has gone to his great reward, leaving a large family and a host of sorrowing friends to mourn his departure.
