May 11, 1935 HAD RESIDED IN IONIA FOR NINETY YEARS Mrs. Polly Strong, Who Descended from One of the County’s True Pioneer Families to Be Buried Monday. Mrs. Polly Strong, 90 years of age, died at the home of her daughter, Dr. Bess Strong, 519 High street, Friday evening May 10 at 6:30 o’clock following an illness since Wednesday of intestinal flu. Mrs. Strong was the daughter of Simon and Nancy Sprague Welch, born on the Pike farm in Easton township, in July 1844. Her parents came to Ionia the year following the settlement of the Dexter colony and made their home in Easton township where the Bertha Brock park is now located. She was one of the first students to attend the Welch school house in Easton which was built by her family, she later attended school in Pennsylvania, with seven other girls from Ionia. Mary Welch, who became the wife of K.R. Smith; Marcia Welch, Mrs. J.H. Hamilton; Ruth Welch, later Mrs. Mary Stevenson Crinns, Mrs. Frank Preston Cornell, Mrs. Sarah Yates Benedict and Mrs. Cornelia Harter Avery. After her marriage to Emory Strong they settled on the farm she still owns in Easton, one-half mile west of the Welch school, where she had resided until July 1924, when Mr. Strong’s death occurred. The land where the homestead was built was cleared by r. Strong and the home built by him. Five children were born to them with, but three surviving, Dr. Bess Strong and Frank Strong of Ionia, and Mrs. Cassie Robinson of Detroit. There are seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren surviving. Mrs. Strong, one of the oldest pioneers of Ionia county, well remembered the days of her girlhood and the experiences she had her 10 brothers and sisters had as they settled their home in Easton and later on High street. She loved to recall the events which had taken place many years ago and though past 90 years of age and an invalid for several years getting about in a wheel chair, she enjoyed to the fullest extent her life as a resident of Ionia county. Her family was one of the largest of the earlier pioneer families and a great deal of the history of the county and especially Easton township began with their efforts and work. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the residence at 519 High street with Rev. Paul L. Stewart officiating. Interment will be held at the family lot at Highland Park cemetery.
