Strong Surrenders To Only Conqueror Of Boys In Blue The thin ranks of Ionia county’s Civil War veterans again have been invaded by the only foe to whom they have ever granted victory, death. Edward P. Strong, 90, for many years a resident of Wood’s corner’s, just north of this city, died December 12 in the Soldiers Home at Grand Rapids. He was a member of the William H. Borden post, of Ionia. Mr. Strong enlisted in Company B, 16th Michigan Infantry in 1861 when he was 24 years of age. In his first engagement, the battle of Mannassa Junction, he was severely wounded. His injuries were such as to bring his removal to the rear lines and he was put into the “Invalid troops” with whom he finished the war in non-combatant occupations. He was wounded August 30, 1861. He continued in the service until after the close of hostilities when he was discharged August 30, 1864. Funeral services were held Wednesday from the home of his son at Remus, Mich.
