Mrs. Strong had been an invalid for four years and influenza caused her death. The daughter of Simon and Nancy Sprague Welch, she was born on the Pike farm in Easton township, November 23, 1844. Her parents came to Ionia county shortly after the Dexter colony was settled and made their first home where the Bertha Brock park is now located. Polly Welch was married to Emory Strong March 6, 1867, and moved one-half mile east of the Welch school house where her husband built their home and cleared the land. The Welch school was built by Mrs. Strong’s family and she was one of the first students ever to attend it. At the age of 17 she herself became a teacher, later she attended school in Pennsylvania and returned to teach again. Emory Strong, before their marriage, was also a teacher in Easton township and for a time after their wedding they continued to teach. Emory Strong was elected register of deeds for Ionia county in 1896 and his wife was his deputy. They moved from the farm in 1917 and made their home with their daughter, Dr. Strong. The husband died in July 1924, and since that time Mrs. Strong has continued to live with the daughter. Although invalided during the last four years of her life, Mrs. Strong’s mind remained unimpaired and her joy in living was a delight to her many friends and to the family. She occupied her time in needlework and quilt making, and just before her last illness had nearly completed a crocheted bedspread. Surviving, of the five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Emory Strong, are one son, Frank; two daughters, Dr. Bessie Strong and Mrs. Cassie Robinson; seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the home, 519 High street, Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Paul L. Stewart officiating. Interment was in Highland cemetery.
