CHAS. STUART KILLED BY TRAIN ---------- WAS STRUCK BY 4:17 "FLYER", MONDAY AFTERNOON, WHILE DRIVNG CATTLE ACROSS CROSSING NEAR HER HOME. BODY WAS BADLY MANGLED ----------- Monday evening while driving cattle across the railroad track just south of her home here, Mrs. Charles Stuart was struck by the 4:17 train and instantly killed. Mrs. Stewart with her mother, Mrs. Wm. Mathews had let the cattle out of the pasture south of the railroad track and Mrs. Stuart started on, leaving her mother to close the gate. A large willow tree in the pasture partly shuts off the view of the track and it is thought that Mrs. Stuart did not see the rapidly approaching train until the cattle were on the track. She succeeded in getting them across with but the narrowest margin, but was herself struck and instantly killed. Mrs. Mathews did not see the accident. She saw the cattle standing at the gate in front of the Mathew home and hurried to let then in, thinking that her daughter had stopped at her own home. Though she crossed the track within a few rods of the mangled body of her daughter, Mrs. Mathews knew nothing of the tragedy until several minutes afterwards. Friends who witnessed the accident told her of it as she admitted the cattle into the barnyard. A number of persons who witnessed the tragedy rushed to the scene, but nothing could be done for Mrs. Stuart. It was found that her legs had been severed just below the hips and that the lower part of her body was badly mangled. Her face and neck, however, were barely scratched. Funeral services for Mrs. Stuart were held at the Methodist church, Wednesday, ten o'clock. Refv Thomas Laity delivering the sermon. the Royal Neighbor society, of which Mrs. Stuart was a member, also held services over the body at the home and at the grave.
