Sunderlin was born in Milo, Yates county, New York, on May 28, 1837. Alonzo was the youngest of five boys, all of whom are now dead except one, who is now a resident of Dundee, N.Y. In the days of his young manhood he was for seven or eight years bookkeeper for a wholesale dry goods house in New York City. In 1862 he came to Michigan locating at East Plains in Clinton county, and in 1863 he moved to Hubbardston, where he engaged in the dry goods business. Later he sold this business, and engaged in the flouring mill business with ex-Sheriff William Reynolds, in which he was measurably successful, but his liking for the store returned and after selling his milling interests to Reynolds, he re-engaged in the dry goods business at Hubbardston. During the time of his residence there he was active in Masonic circles, and was a master of the lodge there. He was married on October 12, 1864, to Anna P. Corey, of East Plains, and to this union four children were born: the eldest, a girl, died at the age of eight years. The three living children are Harry E., Ruby L., and Dacie M., who are all at home to comfort the mother. In his political belief Mr. Sunderlin was an active and devoted Democrat, and served his party and his people well in numerous positions of responsibility. He was a man of fine clerical ability. He represented North Plains on the board of supervisors, was for four years clerk of Ionia county, and at the time of his death was serving Ionia city as a justice of the peace. Alonzo A. Sunderlin.
