Eugene William Suomi, of Ionia, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008.  
He was born on September 27, 1917 in Bessemer, Mich. the son of Matt and 
Wendla (Maki) Suomi.  Mr. Suomi graduated form A. D. Johnston High school in 
1936 in Bessemer, Mich.  Eugene was a graduate of Chicago Tech and served in 
the U.S. Air Force from 1941-45 in the Pacific Theater in Okinawa.  He married 
Viola Parolari at St. Sebastian Church in Bessemer on Sept. 4, 1948.  He 
worked for Boloma Construction before coming to work for the State of Michigan 
as a Building Construction Supervisor, where he worked for 31 years before 
retiring in 1980.  Eugene was a member of the Sheridan V.F.W. Post, SS. Peter 
and Pual Catholic Church and the Board of Directors for the State Employees 
Retirement Association.  

Eugene is preceded in death by his wife Viola in 1984.  Surviving are two 
sons, Eugene Suomi II of Ionia and David Suomi of Sterling, Va; daughter, 
Maria (Tom Carr) Suomi of Mesick, Mich.; four grandchildren, Matthew Suomi, 
Michaela Suomi, Thomas Carr and Christian Carr; and niece, Lillian Suomi of 
Green Bay, Wis.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Melvin Fox at 11 a.m. 
on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ionia.  Rite 
of Committal will take place in the spring at Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer, 
Mich.  The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, 
Feb. 10, 2008 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia.  A 
Scriptural Wake Service will be prayed at 7 p.m. Sunday.
