Ionia Sentinel Standard
A former Lake Odessa resident, Mrs Mary V. Sutherland, 43, of Hastings died 
Thursday evening at St Mary’s hospital in Grand Rapids where she had been a 
patient six months.  Funeral services were Monday at 1:30 pm in Hastings with 
Rev Howard Vugteveen of Lake Odessa officiating.  Interment was at Riverside 
cemetery at Hastings.

She was born in Grand Rapids February 26, 1932, the daughter of Norval and 
Kathryn Matthews Nielsen and came to Hastings with her parents in 1936.  She 
graduated from Western Michigan university at Kalamazoo and received her 
master’s degree from Michigan State university at East Lansing.  She had lived 
and taught one year at Bellevue before retiring in the fall of 1974 due to ill 
health.

Surviving are two sons, James and David of Eaton Rapids; her parents and a 
grandmother, Mrs. Lottie Matthews of Hastings; brother, Robert Nielsen of 
Naperville, Ill., and sister, Mrs. Nancy Gilmore of Portage.
