The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Friday, January 20, 1989
Gary Starr Sutherland, 45, of Ionia, died January 19 at Ionia County Memorial 
Hospital.  He was born September 26, 1943, in Ionia, the son of Neil Starr and 
Esther (Hyland) Sutherland.  He graduated from Portland High School in 1961, 
and had been employed at Spartan Foods in Grand Rapids, as a police officer in 
Covington, Kentucky, and as a Deputy Sheriff for Ionia County Sheriff’s 
Department.  He served with the US Navy during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by two sons, Neil Sutherland of Ionia and Kevin Starr 
Sutherland of Pompano, Florida; one brother, Bruce Sutherland of Ionia; his 
mother, Esther Sutherland of Ionia; many uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and 
cousins.

Complete funeral services will be January 21 at 2 p.m. at Myers Memorial 
Chapel, in Ionia, with the Rev. Willis Braun officiating.  Burial will be in 
Balcom Cemetery.  Visiting hours will be Friday, 2-4 p.m., and 7-8:30 p.m. at 
the Main Street Chapel.  Memorial contributions can be made to the American 
Diabetes Association.
