Born in Elm Hall, near Alma, May 28, 1901, the son of William and Minnie Woodard Swain, he moved with his family as a young man to Ionia where he attended Ionia schools, later accepting employment at the Pere Marquette car shops, the Stafford Furniture Co.; Ypsilanti-Reed Furniture Co. and retired from its successor the Ionia Manufacturing Co. in March 1966. Married to Sophie Peterson, April 13, 1920, the couple made their home in Ionia recently at 638 North Jackson. Surviving besides his wife is his mother, Mrs. Minnie Ellison, of Ionia; two sons, William and Robert of Ionia; two daughters, Mrs. Jack Dehn of Belding and Mrs. Orville Rivers of Sheridan; three brothers, Ivan of Lansing, Delbert of Ionia and Bird Woodard of Ionia. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Fred Klub of Palm Springs, Calif., and six grandchildren. The body is at Boynton-Leddick funeral home where relatives and friends may call Tuesday between 7 and 9 p.m. Mr. Swain will be transferred from the funeral home at noon Wednesday to Lincoln Avenue Baptist church were services will be at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Hadley officiating. Burial will be in Tuttle cemetery.
