Swarthout, 77, died at his home at Empire, Calif., April 23. He was born, the son of Frank and May (Padgett) Swarthout, on the home farm in Ronald township, September 15, 1882, where he spent the earlier years of his life. After attending Ferris Institute he was married to Miss Anna Decker of Carson City, and they lived for a time in Ionia, before going to California, finally making their home in Empire for the past 39 years. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren and took an active part in its interests as long as he was able. He is survived by his wife, Anna, one step-sister, Mrs. Wilbur (Victoria) Beery of Modesto, Calif., and one step-brother, Harry Strong of Santa Cruz, Calif.; Mrs. A.C. Barr of Muir, Mrs. John Pettit of Fenwick, and Miss Nellie Adams of Orleans, are cousins. Funeral was held in Empire with interment in Lakeside Memorial Park, Wednesday, April 27.
