Ionia Standard - December 17, 1909
          ODESSA

   Odessa, De. 14. - Teressa Hess Swarthout was born in Independent, Sussex Co., New
Jersey March 16, 
1817, and died at her home in Odessa, Dec. 2, 1909, in the 93rd year of her age. 
Having moved in early life to 
Waterloo, N. Y., she was married May 19, 1839 to Lawson Hutchins.  Three children
were born, Godfrey, 
Elizabeth and William, the two last preceding her to the better land.  Mr. Hutchins
died in 1847.  In 1850 she 
was married to John Swarthout and soon moved to Lenawee Co., Michigan. In 1864 they
moved to Odessa 
township and settled on the farm where she died.  Three children were born, Barbara,
Esther and Thomas.  
The two former also dead for sometime, only Thomas is still living, who has helped
care for the aged mother.  
Mrs. Swarthout was converted in 1876 during services held at a school house near her
home and remained a 
faithful Christian the remainder of her long life.  The funeral was held at the M.
E. church at Lake Odessa on 
Dec. 5. Interment was made in the family lot in Lakeside cemetery.
