Harold D. Swarthout, 92, of Lansing, formerly of Portland, died Saturday, Jan.
28, 1995.  He was born May 18, 1902, in Morley.  He owned and operated
Swarthout’s Hardware Store in Portland for many years.  He served on the city
council, the Portland school board, including as president, and was mayor for
several years.  He was a charter member and first president of the Portland
Kiwanis Club and a member of the Portland United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife Myrtle; two sons: Harold Lee Swarthout of Daytona Beach,
Fla. and Larry D. (Donna) Swarthout of Spring Lake; five grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; one brother, Manley Swarthout of Hutchinson, Minn.; and two
sisters [unreadable name] of Blanchard and Lillian Uphous of Manchester.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at Neller Chapel, 210
Bridge St. in Portland, with the Rev. Elaine M. Buker, Portland United Methodist
Church, officiating.  Visitation will be at the Chapel Monday, Jan. 30, from
6-7:30 p.m.
