He was born in Germany on January 13, 1868, and when six years of age came to America with his parents to settle at Fowler. He lived there until shortly before his marriage, when he and his mother moved to Ionia. He was married on December 21, 1892, to Minnie Utess, of Ionia and they had lived in Ionia until a year ago when they moved to Jackson with the daughter. For several years he was employed at the carshops in Ionia, until he bought a farm near here where they lived for many years. During the last four years he worked, he was caretaker of the Ionia fair grounds. Survivors are his wife, Minnie; a daughter, Mrs. Richard Todd of Jackson; a stepson, Carl Swartz of Detroit; and three granddaughters, Mrs. Josephine George of Fowler, and Miss Marguerite Todd and Miss Marion Todd of Jackson. A brother, John Swartz, of Ionia, died a year ago last December. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home of Vincent George at Fowler. Rev. R. A. Rook of the St. John’s Lutheran church of Ionia will officiate and interment will be in the Highland park cemetery.
