W. Sweet, 81, formerly of Ionia, died Thursday in Charlotte. He was born, the son of Clifford and Ethel Edlin Sweet, on August 18, 1911, in Ionia. He was graduated from Charlotte High School and he attended Michigan State University. He served in the U.S. Navy. He did some farming and managed properties and investments prior to his retirement. He is survived by his wife Thelma Carr Sweet; four daughters, Cynthia Powers of Omaha, Sue Ellen Denker of Lake Odessa, Catherine Fineis of Atlanta, and Joan Parish of Naples, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Olive Yeomans in 1964. Funeral and committal services will be 1 p.m. Thursday from the Cook Funeral Home, Ionia, with the Rev. Lawrence Hodge officiating. Burial will be in the Easton Cemetery. The family will be at the Rich Street Chapel from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society, Ionia Chapter, in care of the funeral home.
