Mr. Sykes lived for many years on the Sykes farm near Muir, and is well known in the county. --- Oreganian in Portland, Oregon, Friday, June 8, 1917 George Sykes, Civil War Veteran, Called - Sumner Post, Grand Army of the Republic, Will Have Charge of Funeral Services on Saturday Morning. George Sykes, a Civil war veteran, died at his residence, 671 Rodney avenue, Thursday. He served in the Michigan cavalry and participated in 63 battles. Mr. Sykes was a native of England and in his seventy-first year. He came to Oregon in 1903, and is survived by a wife, and three children, Russell B. Sykes, Newberg; N.J. Sykes, Portland; Mrs. M. Mills, Portland. Funeral services under the auspices of Sumner Post. G.A.R., will be held Saturday morning at 9 o’clock from the Central M.E. Church, Vancouver avenue and Fargo street. A.D. Kenworthy & Co., will have charge of arrangements. Interment will be in Rose City cemetery.
