Ionia Daily Standard, 16 Sep 1895

Muir, Sept. 16th – Earnest Sykes, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Sykes, died 
at the home of his parents, 1 ˝ miles north of town, yesterday morning at 
eleven o’clock, in the 21st year of his age.

He was taken suddenly ill Thursday night of last week, and Sunday morning, Drs. 
Smith and Weston of Muir, and Spaulding of Lyons, decided to perform an 
operation, that being the only hope.  They accordingly made arrangements for 
same, but before they were in readiness, they saw that he was fast passing 
away, and that all their efforts were useless.

When told that he could not live, he called for his mother and spent his last 
moments in conversation with her. 

He was at one time a member of our public school, and was in all respects a 
fine young man, one whom all who knew him honored for his manliness.

The funeral services will be held at 2:30 from Presbyterian church, tomorrow 
afternoon.
