Sykes, 73, of Saranac died Wednesday, May 29, 1996 at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was a merchant marine veteran of World War II and was retired from the State of Michigan as a power plant operator. He was a charter member of the Saranac Lions Club and a member of the American Legion Saranac Post 175. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen (Hill) Sykes; daughter, Teresa (James) McCarty, of Saranac; sons: Roderick (Dixie) Sykes, of Saranac and Ronald (Lisa) Sykes, of Grand Ledge; brother, Morse (Lois) Sykes, of Belding; sisters: Joyce (Donald) Geiger, of Ionia and June (Fred) Peabody, of Haslett; special aunt Dorotha Salisbury, of Blanchard; and six grandchildren: Heather (Bob) Hemmingsen, Annette McCarty, Summer and Sara Bowers and Joe and Wade Sykes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Gertrude Morse Sykes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lake Funeral Home in Saranac with the Rev. Dr. Stanley Hagemeyer officiating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
