Jackson St, Ionia, died Sunday at Ionia Manor. Dr. Sykes was born May 17, 1896 in Muir, the son of William and Angelia Scott Sykes. He attended the Muir Schools and graduated from Ionia High School in 1914. He served with the U. S. Army Air Corps in World War I. Dr. Sykes married Violet Weisgerber in 1918 and she preceded him in death in 1944. He then married Elsie Scheurer in 1947. Dr. Sykes operated a clothing store in Muir for a time, and attended Central Michigan University. He graduated from the University of Michigan Dental School in 1940 and was a dentist in the Muir and Ionia area. He lived in Muir before moving to Ionia in 1968. He was a member of the Muir Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Elsie; two sons, William Sykes of Richland and Dr. Robert Sykes of Ionia; one daughter, Mrs. David (Sarah Jane) Hanson, of Ionia; nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Muir Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William Nixon officiating. The body will lie in state until Thursday noon at the Hull Memorial Chapel in Muir, and the family will receive friends and relatives Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial fund had been established in the name of the Muir Presbyterian Church.
