Helen Matilda Sykes, age 86, of Saranac passed away Feb. 2, 2010 in Lowell.

She was born Dec. 30, 1923 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Elmer and Florence 
(Race) Hill. Helen married Joseph Sykes, June 14, 1945 in Ionia; he preceded 
her in death May 29, 1996.

She was a WWII veteran of the Coast Guard. She was a member of the American 
Legion Auxiliary, Boston Historical Society and a past member of Saranac 
Village Board.

Helen is survived by her sons, Roderick Sykes of Saranac and Ronald (Lisa) 
Sykes of Grand Ledge; daughter, Teresa (James) McCarty of Saranac; sister, 
Hildegarde Pierce of Grand Rapids; sisters-in-law, June Peabody of Haslett, 
Joyce (Don) Geiger of Ionia and Billie Hill of Lowell; 8 grandchildren, Heather 
(Bob) Hemmingsen, Annette (Mark) Goss, Joseph Sykes, Sarah (Jared) VanDop, Wade 
Sykes, Jackson Sykes, Summer Matthews and Jacob Sykes and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday at Saranac Community Church with 
Dr. Andrew E. Hill officiating. Interment Saranac Cemetery. The family will 
receive friends and relatives Thursday 4-7 p.m. at Lake Funeral home in 
Saranac. Anyone wishing may make memorial contributions in Helen’s name to
