The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Tuesday, March 16, 1982
Leon F. Sykes, 36, of P.O. Box 431, Meade, Kansas, died March 14 in Meade, 
Kansas, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  He was born August 
16, 1945 in Lansing, the son of Leon and Dorothy Karnate Sykes, but was raised 
by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Sykes of Portland, now both deceased.  
He was a driller on an oil rig for Damac Co. of Mead, Kansas, and a veteran of 
the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Howard (Carol) Graft of Portland, Mrs. 
Edward (Linda) Smith of Fowler, and Elizabeth Sykes of Grand Ledge.  

Scripture service will be held Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. at the Neller 
Funeral Home, Portland.  Funeral mass will be Thursday at 10 a.m. from St. 
Patrick’s Church, Portland, the Rev. Donald Weber celebrant.  Burial will be 
in Portland Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Ronald Lehman, Douglas and Stanley 
Gross, and Richard, Larry and Anthony Feldpausch.
