Mr. Sykes was building a new home on Rich street when he fell down the stairs and was found dead about 6 p.m. Coroner Dale Kauffman ruled death due to a fracture of the skull. He was born December 15, 1895 and was a lifelong resident of Portland. He was still active in the contracting and building business in Portland. A veteran of World War I, he was past commander of American Legion Dale E. Hyland post, member of Dads of Foreign Wars, and 40 and 8 Boiture local 946 in Lansing. Surviving are his wife Della; a son Benjamin, Jr., of Jackson; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; half sister, Mrs. Kate Hendee of Portland. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Neller funeral home in Portland. Graveside services will be under the auspices of American Legion. Interment will be at Portland cemetery. Bearers will be members of American Legion.
